Where the Wild East Meets the Spirit of Patagonia

Asian Patagonia is a fascinating region located primarily in China, specifically in the autonomous region of Xinjiang. This region is renowned for its diverse landscape, which encompasses vast steppes, mountain massifs, and deserts — which is precisely why many compare it to South American Patagonia. What makes Asian Patagonia particularly captivating is its rich cultural heritage, as it is home to numerous ethnic groups, including the Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and Tajiks, who have lived here for centuries. The area attracts mainly adventurers and nature lovers, who come here for hiking, mountaineering, and exploring lesser-known, touristically uncharted destinations. Thanks to its isolation and unspoiled nature, Asian Patagonia represents an ideal destination for those seeking an escape from the modern world and longing for truly authentic experiences.

How the Trek Works

The trek is designed for maximum of 6 adventurous participants who enjoy the sporting nature of the experience. Over 6 days of hiking, you will cover nearly 100 kilometres at altitudes ranging between 3,000 and 4,400 metres. The most demanding section involves an ascent of 1,500 m followed by a descent of 2,000 m. No climbing equipment is required for the trek — you will not be moving on snow or ice. The highest point you will pass through is the Ak Tubek Pass at an altitude of 4,390 m.

You will hike with a lighter backpack, while the remaining luggage and all equipment — including the kitchen and tents — are transported by horses and donkeys. A local guide with more than a decade of mountain experience is equipped with a walkie-talkie, keeping him in constant contact with the support team. He ensures the smooth running of the trek every step of the way.

Where you Sleep

Upon landing in the city of Osh (the second largest city in Kyrgyzstan), you will have an approximately eight-hour transfer by air-conditioned minibus to the mountains. The first and second-to-last night will be spent in authentic guest houses, featuring private twin rooms, shared showers with hot water, and toilets. For the following 5 nights, you will be camping in the open nature by a river, which serves as the sole source of water and the place for your morning and evening hygiene. The last night before your return home can be enjoyed at a four-star hotel complete with an outdoor swimming pool.

Daily program

Sunday

DAY 1 – OSH → OZGORUSH VILLAGE

We will welcome you at the airport in Osh, an ancient oriental city and the second largest in Kyrgyzstan. Together, we will head to the Batken Region westward, with the transfer by air-conditioned minibus taking approximately 8 hours. Along the way, we will stop for lunch at a local restaurant, where you can enjoy kebab, samsa, or local dumplings. In the afternoon, we will arrive at the village of Ozgorush, where we will rest at an authentic guest house, explore the surroundings, and brief you on the programme. You will get to enjoy the finest Kyrgyz beer and a homemade dinner.

You will be staying in shared twin rooms at the guest house.

Monday

DAY 2 – INTO THE WILD

An early departure for the trek. From this day onwards, you will be passing through nothing but the breathtaking nature of the Pamiro-Alaj mountain range, completely away from civilisation, encountering only nomadic families living in these high-altitude areas.

Your support team will load all the luggage onto horses and donkeys, typically arriving at the destination ahead of us so they can set up your base camp — including pitching the tents, preparing the kitchen, and more.

You will be sleeping in tents.

Tuesday

REST DAY, ACCLIMATISATION HIKE

Today is a rest day, with the option to embark on an 8-kilometre hike towards a mountain whose summit rises to 5,355 m a.s.l., where you can admire the breathtaking glacier tongues. During this hike, you will ascend 500 metres in elevation.

Wednesday

SUMMIT DAY – CROSSING THE AK TUBEK PASS

Are you ready to climb even higher? The horses have already set off ahead of us with the load, and we will begin ascending at our own pace towards the pass, whose summit lies at 4,400 m a.s.l. The route is not particularly long, but we will be reaching a considerable altitude — so it is important to pace yourself and conserve your energy.

We will then descend into the valley towards a river, which we will need to ford. But don't worry — it can be crossed with dry feet. Not far from the river and a juniper forest, we will find a suitable spot to set up base camp. We will light a campfire, enjoy a good hot dinner, and play a round of cards. This evening, you will be treated to a magnificent natural spectacle: the surrounding majestic mountains and their smooth walls will reflect the moonlight, while millions of stars will light up the sky above your heads.

You will be sleeping in tents.

Thursday

THROUGH THE JUNIPER FOREST – CROSSING THE SECOND PASS

Today we will cross the river and continue along the riverbed before beginning our ascent towards another pass, whose summit sits at 3,700 m a.s.l. The switchbacks wind through a juniper forest, which provides a welcome and refreshing shade. From the top of the pass, we will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of an "ocean" of jagged, snow-capped peaks.

Friday

THE LEGEND OF ASAN AND USEN

"It was in ancient times. An old man who lived in the mountains had two sons, twins. Their names were Asan and Usen. He raised them to be warriors and good sons. A war broke out and both sons were killed in battle. Then the old man, in his grief and sorrow, raised his hands to the sky and asked Allah: Allah! You take lives, you give lives. Return my sons to me and take my life in their place. So be it!"

Allah heard his prayer, the earth opened up, and in that very place two great peaks rose up — Asan (4,230 m) and Usen (4,378 m). It is towards these two mighty massifs that you will set out today. Otherwise, a rest day awaits you.

You will be sleeping in tents.

Saturday

HIKING TO THE AK SUU GORGE – MOUNT SLESOV

Today you will embark on a hike into the Ak Suu gorge towards the summit of Mount Slesov. The peak of Slesov (4,240 m) resembles a monolithic rock face, rising dramatically from the landscape. The mountain was named Slesov by Russian alpinists in honour of their compatriot, the celebrated Russian mountaineer Ivan Slesov.

You will be sleeping in tents.

Sunday

FINAL TREKKING DAY – FAREWELL TO SLESOV

We will bid farewell to Slesov and its majestic neighbours situated along the Turkestan Ridge. Today you will be walking downhill all day. The route is long — over 20 kilometres — but it will be anything but boring. First, we will reach the confluence of Ak-Suu and Karavshin, pass by the ruins of an ancient settlement known as Karavshin, and then make our way to the confluence with the Meshi River. Along the way, we will stop to rest, brew some tea, and enjoy a snack. At the finish line, a jeep will be waiting to take us on an adventurous ride over more passes to the village of Ak-Tatyr, where we will spend the night with a local family.

You will be staying at a guest house.

Monday

BACK TO OSH – A TASTE OF CENTRAL ASIA

This morning we make our way back to the city of Osh. Once in Osh, we will fill our time with a walk around the city, visiting local landmarks such as the Chelush Bazaar or the massive Lenin statue on the main square, along with other fascinating relics of the Soviet era.

The city is celebrated as the culinary capital of the Kyrgyz Republic — we will share a few tips on the best restaurants in town so you can treat yourself to an unforgettable meal.

You will be staying at a 4-star hotel.
